Twitter has become the number one platform to share your thoughts with other users.
You can tweet about everything you want - of course, there are some particular words and ideas that should not be shared.
Either way, your home timeline is always showing relevant tweets that you might find interesting.
It’s normal to have differences of opinion, even with your friends or family.
But you don’t want to receive notifications of annoying tweets that a person made, and you just know you won’t like them, right?
We’ve got a solution for you: Muting on Twitter. After reading this article, you will now comprehend:

- What happens to muted account’s profile;
- Differences between a blocked account and a muted account.
What Does Mute Mean on Twitter?
Muting is a feature that allows you to remove an account’s tweets from your timeline. This can be easily achieved without unfollowing or blocking a user, which is why it is so useful for many people.
You can unmute or mute an account whenever you want. The muted user will still see you in their followers and will still be able to interact with your account, but there are some limitations that we must get to know.
What Happens When You Mute Someone on Twitter?
When Twitter introduced the mute button back in 2014, some users didn’t fully understand how to use this icon.
Now, it’s clear for everyone that the main purpose of muting an account is to limit their visibility and not get rid of a person forever - that’s what blocking is for.
But, what happens to a muted account? Will each tweet they make just disappear forever from your notifications tab? You are about to find out.
Muting a Twitter Account You Follow
When you mute users you follow, the following things happen:
- They will still be able to send you a direct message and to interact with you;
- You won’t see muted accounts tweets on your timeline again unless you tap the “read more” icon in their conversations;
- Muted users won’t ever know you muted them.
Muting a Twitter Account You Don’t Follow
If, on the other hand, you mute accounts that you don’t follow, then:
- If you tap a conversation where the accounts appear, you won’t ever see the tweets;
- You won’t ever get notifications if the muted accounts write to you;
- They will still be able to see your profile page.
