How to Stream on Discord

  Karen

Did you know that besides text, voice, and video chat, Discord offers great live streaming capabilities?

The streaming feature is popular among gamers however, besides games, you can also stream other types of content. Thanks to great stream quality, Discord became one of the most popular apps for streaming in recent years.

In this article, you will learn more about streaming capabilities and how to stream on Discord - whether you are looking for ways to stream games or other types of content.

To start with, let’s have a quick look at what exactly does it mean by “streaming”.

Discord streaming features

Discord has built-in features which allow its users to do just that: broadcast their desktop screens, webcam feeds, VLC streams, etc. You can even use third-party apps like OBS Studio to create custom broadcasting setups.

Here are the highlights of some of the main functions:

Simultaneous live streaming up to 50 participants

Originally Discord allowed for a live stream of up to 10 people but due to the pandemic, in March 2020, Discord announced an increase in the limit and currently allows for up to 50 participants.

Streamer mode

Streamer mode on Discord allows you to hide sensitive account info, disable all SFX and notifications and it will automatically turn on and off with OBS/XSplit.

Multistreaming

Multiple people can stream from a single voice channel.

Before You Start Streaming

Here are some things you should consider before starting streaming content on Discord.

Requirements

Although streaming on Discord works on both web versions as well as a standalone desktop client, for stability, we suggest installing a standalone Discord app, especially if you plan to share your entire screen.

The Discord server you will be streaming on needs to have at least one voice channel. If you want to stream on your own Discord server and you don’t have one yet, see how to make a discord server first.

Choose Discord’s stream quality

There are three different qualities available: low, medium, high. Low is good enough for basic video calls, while high offers better image resolution and audio clarity. Players should try out each one until they get comfortable with the results before deciding which one works best for them.

If you want better stream quality with a resolution of 1080p and a 60 frame rate, you’ll need Discord’s premium service called Discord Nitro. We consider it a must-have for game streaming.
