The Ethereum Network is becoming more and more standard in today’s world every day that passes, but this brings consequences.

High gas fees and slow processing times seem to be the rule now when it comes to using Ethereum, but Polygon presents itself as an escalating solution for these matters.

If you have a MetaMask crypto wallet for storing your assets, then you surely want to experience cheaper transaction fees and faster operations.

That’s why it’s important to learn how to connect MetaMask to the Polygon Network.

In today’s article, we’ll be showing you a step-by-step guide so you can learn more about the following matters:

  • How to add Polygon to MetaMask;
  • Understanding the Polygon mainnet;
  • Things you must know before adding the Polygon network to MetaMask.

MetaMask and the Polygon Network

The MetaMask wallet operates mainly with Ethereum compatible blockchain networks.

As a consequence, connecting to other networks requires a manual or automatic procedure on the wallet’s settings.

The Polygon’s Mainnet, previously called Matic Network, operates on top of Ethereum Mainnet.

Still, it doesn’t come by default on MetaMask wallet, so if you want to use the Polygon Network, you will need to connect it to the wallet.

Polygon / Matic requires a compatible wallet in order to work, and MetaMask seems like the best solution for getting the network directly switched without major problems.

Pro Tip: MetaMask has proven to be one of the most reliable software wallets out there.

You can even Add NFTs to MetaMask so you have your assets stored in a safe environment. Learn more about this matter by reading our related blog post.

Set Up your MetaMask Wallet

First and foremost, if you don’t have Metamask wallet yet and want to add the Polygon Network to MetaMask, you will need a properly set up wallet.

  1. Download MetaMask. Although adding the Polygon Network is possible on MetaMask’s mobile app, we highly recommend doing this from a browser instead;
  2. Save your seed phrase and set up your wallet. If you ever lose the phrase and have the wallet opened, just go to the settings tab to find it. You can select “Import Wallet” before logging in if you want to export your secret recovery phrase;
  3. Now that everything is set and ready to go, you can proceed to add Polygon’s Network.

How to Add Polygon to MetaMask

Now you know it: using tokens on the Matic network requires you to add Polygon’s Mainnet - there’s no way around it.

Worry not - doing so is elementary, and we’ll show you the step-by-step process.

Without further ado, let’s add Polygon Network to MetaMask!

Pro Tip: Using crypto hardware wallets is one of the safest alternatives for storing your assets.

If you are trying to connect your Ledger wallet to MetaMask, and the “ Internal JSON-RPC MetaMask” error appears, read this post to learn how to solve it.

Method 1: Configure Polygon Bridge (PolygonScan)

The first method consists of simply using an online bridge connected to your wallet.

Step 1: Go to Polygon Scan

Firstly, go to PolygonScan.com. Make sure to open the website using the browser where you have downloaded the MetaMask extension.

Step 2: Click on “Add Polygon Network”

Scroll down to the bottom of the page until you find a button that says “Add Polygon Network.”

Step 3: Click on “Approve” and Add Polygon’s Mainnet

Click on the previously mentioned button, and MetaMask settings will open.

There, select “Approve” and there you go - you have now added the Matic Mainnet.

Method 2: Manually Add Polygon Mainnet

The second method consists of adding the network manually.

Step 1: Open MetaMask Wallet Browser Extension

Click on the MetaMask extension and select the Ethereum Network bar.

Step 2: Open the Network Dropdown List

In the network selection dropdown list, tap on “Add Network.” MetaMask will immediately redirect you to a screen where you will be able to set the Network Name, Custom RPC, Chain ID, and more.

Step 3: Add the Following Network Details

Once the screen to add a network gets opened, you will need to carefully input the following information on the mentioned fields:

Network Name Field (this can be anything): Polygon

New RPC URL Field URL: https://polygon-rpc.com

Mainnet New RPC URL (You can use any of these URLs - pick one):

https://rpc-mainnet.maticvigil.com

https://rpc-mainnet.matic.network

https://rpc-mainnet.matic.quiknode.pro

Chain ID Field: 137

Currency Symbol Field: MATIC

Block Explorer URL Field: https://polygonscan.com/

Step 4: Start Receiving Matic Tokens

Finally, click on “Save” and you will be done - that’s how you connect MetaMask to the Polygon network.

You can receive tokens from the Matic Network now.

In order to receive Matic Tokens, you need to Add Custom Token to MetaMask.

This is a really easy process and we show you how to do it in our related blog post.

That’s all for today! We hope you successfully get the Polygon Network connected to your wallet.

Polygon Metamask FAQ

Is Trust Wallet a Polygon Wallet?

Trust Wallet can be used as a Polygon Wallet without getting the network directly switched.

This means that you won’t need to add a custom RPC nor other information in order to use different networks, such as the Polygon / Matic Mainnet.
